What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga Therapy is a process of working together to address certain life challenges that affect our wellness and potential and address specific health concerns. These may be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or a combination of these.
Yoga Therapy empowers an individual to manage life's ups and downs and obstacles using and selecting from ancient practices of yoga which have survived for 1000's of years for a reason. The process aims to support and strengthen the individual's inner resources through the ancient knowledge and techniques of yoga. We work out what challenges you have and how to overcome these including discipline as it can be hard to find motivation to practice regularly. When you experience it works and what trips you up, it can help. It is important to consider your inner purpose - whatever you long for more than anything else (from the heart rather than ego centred goal). We can work through strategies if this helps or get straight into it. We may have to do a few postural and strength type tests to assess which practices might work for you. You can keep in touch by text, email or phone between sessions and I will also give you practices such as recordings and a written plan with instructions and pictures to take home. We will make it realistic so you are not overwhelmed by having to do it every day or too many practices. It can take as little as a session for some people but usually atleast 3 sessions are recommended. You can use the session to simply create a home practice but usually imbalances are caused by something which can take more than one session to figure out.
What is a Yoga Therapist?
A Yoga Therapist works with you one on one addressing concerns, to progressively build a simple personalised combination of practices to suit your needs. It is recommended to have 3 sessions ideally spread about 6 weeks apart. Each session is followed up to see how the client is going and to make any changes to the practice.
What to Expect
You can book in for a series of private sessions to work out a tailored home practice plan suited to your individual needs. It starts with a call, a questionnaire that you bring to the first session or email ahead and I can take some time to look over it first, where we have a talk and run through a variety of techniques & practices until we find a selection that will address your needs and wants and fit into your life. I will record a personalised yoga nidra for you while you relax in a restorative position and enjoy. You will take away with you a feeling of being listened to hopefully and of a positive plan to move forward. You will have a personalised recording and stick figures and the following day I will email you the plan complete with instructions and pictures. The plan is generally short and manageable (unless specified otherwise & you will soon realise it needs to be shorter ;). If you are committed to following it, it should make a big difference to how you feel. If you don't do it, it obviously wont work!! Saying this, I do understand how difficult it is to stick to a plan so you can call me, text me and email me between sessions with any questions and if you are feeling something's not working and I will also check up on you to see how you are going ... so you have a nudge to practice :)! If you are in pain, that is usually enough to give you incentive. It is recommended to book 3 sessions (reduced rate) because after trying out, modifications are often needed and practices need to be tweaked or changed and what worked really well or didn't make much difference considered and adapted accordingly. You have up to 8 weeks between each session to use them so 3 sessions sees you through 6 months although obviously closer together is better!
