Sunday 22 September – Happy Vernal / Spring Equi (equal) nox (night)!
The Spring equinox marks a balance of light and dark, day and night. It is a time for gradually shedding the heavy kapha (earth/water) element of winter and moving towards the light vata (air) element. It is a time for de-cluttering and letting go of what we no longer need or want. Just as Winter is a time to restore, reflect and turn inward, nurture and contemplate change. It is a time to reflect on our journey and what wisdom/knowledge we've gained during the time of introversion. Spring is a time to consider where we are heading and plant the seeds for change, a time to put in place new vision and ideas. It is a great time to trust intuition and look within for inner light/knowledge. It's at 10:43pm in 2024 Eastern Australian time.
Diet
Allergies can be high at this time of year and regular neti (nostril cleansing) can help with this - be sure to use pure/clean boiled water or saline solution. Tongue scraping is also a great daily cleansing practice. A squeeze of lemon and even a pinch of freshly grated turmeric and a squeeze of honey is said to be detoxing in the morning instead of tea and it is delicious. It would depend on an individual’s health and constitution as to what foods they would benefit from but generally there is a move towards lighter foods, leafy vegetables and herbs but still benefitting from warm foods and spices.
Yoga
Forward bends, twists and PMA3 practices such as rowing the boat and churning the mill are good to cleanse the liver and gall bladder and regular walks in nature particularly early in the morning can be very uplifting. Twists and inversions and backbends are also great cleansers/detoxers. I feel great if I stick to my routine and regular practice and not so good when I am less disciplined in how I practice. It makes a difference in how I feel and connect with life. My intensity of practice does occasionally drop a little and that is okay. I will always be working towards achieving my potential while accepting where I am at.
Postures
Forward bends, hip openers, twists, backbends.
Other recommendations
Dry brushing is good for the circulation. Earlier nights and mornings are recommended.
