AUTUMN (Fall) Equinox & Ayurveda
The Autumnal equinox in The Southern hemisphere (including Australia) falls on Mon 20 March 2:06pm this year/2024 in Australia marking equal light and dark (day and night). We will be practicing yogic practices to help keep you balanced this Fall.
According to Ayurvedic principles, there are three elements (energy types) called doshas that influence us and the world around us. An individual usually has a predominant dosha type/s just like each season.
During Autumn the predominant element is Vata (air and ether). The qualities of Vata include lightness, movement, dryness. When there is a vata derangement / disturbance, it can affect the nervous system creating mental, emotional and physical imbalances. The purpose for this disturbance is perhaps to aid the process of elimination (letting go) and move into change so just as trees loose their leaves, we can use this time to shake off what no longer serves our intention/purpose, making space for more strength and energy for change and accepting new possibility and potential.
Therefore, we can practice breathing techniques to ‘let go’ such as Nadi Shodhana with a longer out breath or rhythmic breathing 1:1 to help maintain a constant internal environment throughout the change in season or throughout times of stress or turmoil. It is also helpful to counterbalance the effect of the air element by practicing balancing practices and grounding, earthy practices that keep our feet on the ground and strengthen our legs. Vata has cold, dry, rough and irregular qualities too, which can be counterbalanced through diet, eg. eating earthy root vegetable soup rather than cold foods/salads) and warm chamomile or ginger tea and keeping to a routine of going to bed (e.g by 10am and waking at 6am). Bathing in nourishing essential oils or moisturizing and keeping warm is also recommended. Practices such as chest openers are great to keep the lungs healthy and let go. Digestive practices are useful to get that counter effect of heat and fire in the belly which will also give us strength and help eliminate.
So take care of your Self this Autumn especially if you have 'deranged vata' (e.g. increased anxiety, stress, mental disturbances, excess thought). Rejoice in what you’ve achieved so far this year and enjoy the harvest that you’ve worked hard for – new perceptions/lessons learned, let go of what no longer serves you and consider new seeds (goals) to sow!
